HISTORY

Six years ago, long before the YouTube and Social Network hype, media artist Merel Mirage pictured a visionary notion: an art piece that connects public space with the playful character of the Internet. Merel developed a user friendly animation program for the Internet and devised a variety of projection means. This resulted in the world’s first Internet vending machine – decorative vending machines with built-in screens containing sensible candy – which allows everyone to view the animation clips produced online. One of the first social communities centered on active and creative contributing users was born. Click here for more information about our vending machines.

Why has Holy never been hyped?

Because Holy never had the advantage of a marketing department, the foundation remained hidden from the masses. Although this might compliment the modest character of the foundation, Holy believes thousands of clip makers deserve more. Holy possesses one of the largest online archives containing animation clips produced by teenagers. We were one of the first to use the Internet to unite users in communities and apply it for educative causes. In the past years numerous groups have started a community in Holy. The clips from these communities present a unique group-picture. Click here for more information about our groups.

The educational side of Holy

All year Holy offers workshops for people of any age. The participants make use of software developed by Holy to express a variety of subjects. At the end of the workshop the clips are discussed collectively. The workshops mostly take place in schools. The workshops can also be employed in other terrains. Think for instance about hospitals, asylum seeker centers, or corporate businesses. We supply an original means of communicating on difficult issues. Furthermore, our workshops stimulate both creativity and team spirit.

Events and contests

Besides the workshops and online communities, Holy regularly organizes events. These events aim to encourage social participation among teens and elderly alike. One of our central goals is to stimulate young people on personal and social terrains. Accordingly Holy organizes the annual Clips for Freedom, a national campaign centered on liberation day. An event with a competition element can give young people the needed drive to express and share their creativity. For more information on our events click here.

Cultural and social importance

Community, public space and social exchange of creativity have always been important to Holy. With its projects Holy tries to defy the negative aspects of individualization. Contemporary public places are gradually turning into transit space, through which one travels as quickly as possible. Today’s streetscape seems dominated by people traveling from A to B who only notice their iPod, mobile phone, laptop, or PsP. Public spaces are decreasingly places of social interaction and serendipity. Holy chooses to work with these tools to strengthen notions of self expression and debate in the social community.

Making, sharing, and preserving clips

The Events and workshops have resulted in an animation treasure room. Animation is one of the oldest art forms and has constantly entertained people around the world. Animation has always been a medium centered on technology. Hence with the dawn of the digital era and cheaper production techniques, the genre has become very popular. Fortunately making an animation is no longer a tedious task, like it was a few decennia ago. Holy allows people of all ages to instantly create a clip, share it and preserve it. This can be done on our site or throughout the internet via blogs, personal websites, social networks and email. Watch the most recent animation now or create one yourself.
